I’ve worn Muji clothes for as long as I can remember shopping at Muji. The first item was a confetti-striped tank top I bought at the London store when I was 8. I wore this tank all the time. With that tank, my devotion to Muji, not just as an office supply destination, began.
When I first moved to New York, I became infatuated with Japanese magazines, specifically Fudge, a now semi-defunct (you can’t buy it at Kinokuniya anymore) women's magazine that championed long skirts and red wings. The whole look required a good amount of Muji.
Last summer, I popped in looking for closet organizers and left with two perfect skirts. It’d been a while since I’d found something, but these skirts were exactly what I was looking for, except for the elastic waistband. Often overlooked for clothing, Muji (to me) feels like a slightly more TOAST version of Uniqlo. Most of the items are under $100, and the quality — for that price — is far better than any of the other comparable stores. Summer skirts and dresses were now on the list.

My grandmother was visiting the city last week, and she loves Muji, so I found time for us to leisurely walk through the store. I’m usually in a rush at Muji, but not this time, giving me a chance to look at all the items. I’ve been buying less (it’s fun, actually; you should try it), so I left empty-handed with a long list of notes to relay to you.
